About Us

What we do

We carry containerised goods from the U.K. & Europe to North Africa.

Who we are

A family business which has existed for six generations, with a turnover of more than 60 million Euros and more than 200 employees working in our main office of La Spezia.

How we operate

Containerised sea transport is a business with an intensive employment of capital. We use 8 container vessels with a capacity ranging from 200 to 1,200 teus for a total of about 4,000 slots. We have a container fleet of about 15,000 units, we run our private container terminal in La Spezia. Our partner Nora SpA (100% owned by Tarros Group) has an inland depot of more than 80,000 sq.m. in Santo Stefano Magra for container storage, repair and maintenance. The group has capital shares in several European and Mediterranean maritime agencies.

Our philosophy

Multi-modal transport is the only world-wide solution for transporting general cargoes, according to international standards. Containers are the most used means of transport among trading nations, they can be carried by different modes of transport: road, rail, ship. In this way we want our group to grow and offer to our customers complete "door to door" supply chain logistics services in a fast and reliable way.

Our mission

When Malcolm MacLean started the first full-container service on the Atlantic coast of the United States of America in the late '50s, no one could imagine that the containerised transport would become, in a short time, the most widespread means of exchange of products in the world.

We have been involved in transport since 1963, when Tarros was founded, and therefore we contributed to develop containerisation in the Mediterranean Sea from the very beginning.

In February 1967 the vessel “Vento del Golfo” started the first regular intraMed container service linking Genoa and Porto Torres, Sardinia, followed by m/v “Vento di Levante” in april 1967.

Due to our medium size structure we could not compete in a global market, so we "focused" our activity on a regional scale within the Mediterranean Area. Considering that door-to-door transport requires a direct control on the whole logistic chain, we developed our own terminal in La Spezia, and also contracted alliances with local operators and entered into partnerships with our agents in some ports of destination.

Our role on the territory

On December 2001 Tarros SpA celebrated their thirtieth anniversary in La Spezia and we believe that much still has to be done so that our group (with 400 employees, including those involved in connected activities) may be fully integrated in the territory of our home port, which is rich in natural assets and prospects of development.

We strongly believe in the respect of the territory and of the people living on it and we know that many European port cities, from Hamburg to Barcelona, Lisbon or Southampton, are experiencing positively that port industry and tourism can live together. This shows that inter-modal transport can grow side by side with tourism for the benefit of all.

Tarros UK was established with the same philosophy, in order to better serve the British market and looking at the link we have established between the U.K. and North Africa since 1976 both for Full and more lately for Part (Groupage) Containers to grow and continue into the future.
